A Foundation of Hope

Sixty years ago, in 1963, ChildHope founder John Bueno first received the vision for ChildHope.   John recounted the story …

Driving home late from a church board meeting, he encountered a young boy selling newspapers on the street corner.

There were three newspapers left.  John knew the little boy could not return home until he had sold each one … So John bought all three.

But driving away he knew the boy would be back on the corner the next day with another stack of newspapers to sell, and the next day, and the next, and the next …

The purchase of those papers gave the boy relief for the moment, but it didn’t change his life or future.  He, and others like him, needed a long lasting solution to truly transform their lives.

  • They needed God’s love so they would understand the value they have.
  • They needed the Good News of Jesus Christ that would give them hope for today and the future.
  • And they needed a quality education to break the cycle of poverty.

This sparked the vision that became the first school, established in El Salvador. Sixty years later, this vision has grown into ChildHope and has spread throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.

The lives transformed — many of the children who heard the Good News and received God’s love and an education — are now self-sustaining adults.

They are in the work force making a positive contribution to their society and nation.  They serve the Lord in local churches.

Many are professionals and others are in full time ministry.  Many give back by working as teachers and directors and administrators and pastors in our ChildHope schools.

Young people who once had no hope are now not only providing for themselves and their families, but they are also being a blessing to others.

If you’re a long-time sponsor, your very first sponsored child is probably now a responsible adult, providing for their family, serving in their church, thanking God every day for the gift you gave them …

ChildHope is so grateful to have had a hand in shaping generations of children empowered to understand God created them in His image with a purpose to serve Him and be productive in society.

With prayers and support from friends like you, we disciple the children and give them the education they need to break out of the poverty cycle that would have kept them dependent on others.

Because of ChildHope and friends like you, children like that boy who sold papers on the street corner can now fulfill the promise of God in Jeremiah 29:11.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Thank you for making hope and a future possible for the children of Latin America and the Caribbean!
